It all started thirty years ago when Roy Haynes was tapped as a last-minute substitute for a no-show Santa at a New York inner-city recreation center.

Then while living in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Roy's Christmas Day Santa Claus appearance on a crowded beach made the newspaper, with a front-page color photo in the Fort Lauderdale Sun Sentinel.  Now it's a tradition.  Christmas 2009 was no exception.

For the past eleven years, Roy Haynes has been bringing cheer on Christmas Day to elderly and infirm residents of hospitals and nursing homes.  Many of these folks would have no family or other visitors, even on the holidays.  Roy and furry family members ensure they have the happiest holidays imaginable.

Roy notes:  "We were accompanied by our reinDOG, Sam, who is a humongous, lovable Mastiff we rescued a few months back.  Sam was transported to us by a compassionate individual with his own airplane who volunteers for A.R.F. (Animal Rescue Flights).  During yesterday's visit, one of the nurses told us she had not seen a particular patient-resident smile until he saw Sam!!  This patient was in the Alzheimers ward.  Although his memory was failing, he fondly recalled a family pet from many years ago."

Helping beings in need is hardly a new activity for Roy Haynes.  He and his wife Lisa, a retired professional wrestler, have taken in and loved animals in need at their Huntington, Vermont home.  Their nonprofit rescue is called S.O.S. - VT, for Save Our Strays.

These photos were all taken on December 25, 2009 at Birchwood Terrace Healthcare and Starr Farm Nursing Center in the Old North End of Burlington, Vermont.

When making your donation please make notation that your donation purchase of the book, how many you would like, and to where they should be mailed.  Thank you.
SOS, Save Our Strays does not spend monies on salaries or offices so you can be sure 100% of your donation will go directly toward the care of animals.  The cost of vet care and pet food ....your contribution is truly appreciated!

SOS, Save Our Strays was founded in 1996 and remains "Dedicated to Sustaining the Lives of Companion Animals."  Due to the many "retirees" at our facility and the economic slowdown, our focus has shifted from "sheltering" to "assisting PEOPLE" so that they can continue to care for their beloved companion in their current home!
We do this through providing a "pet food shelf" for those in need and offering financial assistance/support for vet care when funds allow.
We receive no federal or state support and remain independent.  We are committed to helping people, so that we can help prevent homeless pets and over population.

DO YOU NEED HELP TO SPAY OR NEUTER YOUR PET?
SOS, Save Our Strays is committed to ending pet over population.
SOS, Save Our Strays works to help pet owners spay and neuter their pets!  We believe every pet deserves to be spayed/neutered and we will do whatever we can to help their care givers obtain this very valuable surgery.  Other groups and humane organizations focus on "public education" - Save Our Strays focus is on "taking action and tackling the problem!"  This is the only way to end pet over population!  To learn more click here.

We look forward to working with our neighbors in helping to eliminate unwanted litters.  Please feel free to contact SOS, Save Our Strays any questions you may have.
