Did you adopt a pet from Save Our Strays?  Why not send us an update and a recent photo.  You never know, your story may be displayed right here!

Skye (formerly "Noel") came to us last fall when she was just a tiny pup. The town Animal Control Officer (Pam) brought her to us after she was hit by a FedEx truck and her family "signed her over." She arrived at Save Our Strays near unconscious & injured. She was taken for vet care, nursed back... to health, then adopted to a new home. Here is their latest update.

Good day Lisa: Thought you might like an updated photo of my sisters lab/wolf puppy. She is as big as her 2 year old brother is now. She is on the left of the photos. Cloud is on the right. Her hind quarters are changing colors quickly to the silver/gray. She is a beauty and a little bundle of pep trust me. Just a heads-up also I will be sending along a donation to you very soon. Be watching for it.

Rachel was from a Vermont hording household.  She, along with 11 other dogs were rescued that day.  All in terrible condition, fleas bitten, lost fur, feces covering their body and impacted into their paws, and none had ever stepped outside the room in which they were kept....never to see grass or sunlight!  Now - that has all changed and Rachel (now known as Molly) has a great life ahead of her.

Hi Lisa,
I wanted to give you a quick update on the puppy we recently adopted. We've named her Molly... what a sweetheart. She is VERY people oriented. She follows us all around the house. She has met our daughter's dog, Sella, and she is learning puppy manners from her. She sleeps well through the night after crying for a few minutes tops. We have her on a 3 times per day feeding schedule... she has a healthy appetite! So far she has learned the command 'sit' for treats and her food dish - consistently! She has only had 2 poop accidents since we brought her home... She's learning to pee outside, but that is taking longer, as expected. I forgot how small puppy bladders were. We have had a very active few days, so she isn't getting a lot of sleep during the day... but eventually she crashes...
Thank you so much for giving so much of yourself to rescue these animals. Our Molly is a joy and we will be forever grateful that she was able to find us!                         - - - -      Donna and Ralph

Luna's situation was brought to our attention be a fellow rescuer.  She knew how hopeless Luna's outlook was while she was being held at a very overcrowded shelter in a big city - where Pitty and Pitty mixes rarely if ever find a home.  This shelter is one that many readers may find familiar as it airs as one of the featured shelters on TV's Animal Planet Cops TV show.   When Luna came into that shelter she was skinny, had a belly full of dead pups and was dog down on her luck.  But now Luna has a happy ending thanks to the folks who adopted her, the caring people at the facility and the folks who recognized a good dog despite the fact that her breed is not always seen  in a positive light.

Hi Lisa and Roy;

Thank you for the opportunity to give Luna the home she deserves. our contact info.  We can only imagine what she has been through.  She is progressing quite well.  When she first came to us she had difficulty transitioning from inside to out.  It was something about the door we think.  Once she was out she was fine, and once she was in she was fine, but wouldn't’t go through the door without a leash and considerable coaxing.  She now will go through on her own, hesitantly, but on her own.  She has made tremendous progress in the time that she has been home.  We would also like to take this opportunity to ask if we could be included on the SOS roster of volunteers.  We would be willing to do transport and quite possibly anything else that is needed.  You have our contact info.  Thanks again and we will stay in contact with updates.    David & Debbie Luna GraceLuna Grace 1

Angel was just another puppy from an unwanted litter - dumped to die.  She was brought into our rescue and then placed into a loving home.  She had really big ears as a baby - and from the photo provided by her adoptive family it looks as if she will never really grow into them!

Hi, I just wanted to update you on a dog I adopted march 2nd, 2009.  Her name was Angel (now Hannah).  She is 6 months old now and we just couldn’t be happier.  I remember when we adopted her you had asked that we send you a photo of her dressed up.  Well during the 4th of July she got a pretty dress so I will send that to you.  She has been the most amazing dog and we couldn’t be happier.  We especially needed her because 2 ½ weeks ago, Buddy, our min pin has passed.  She has been doing well coping without her little brother though.  She has grown very fond of the cats.

My mother in law runs a daycare next door and she has 2 dogs and Hannah is so wonderful with the young kids and they just adore her (as does everyone else).

Other than that things have been going wonderful with her and we thank you soooo much for blessing us with her, we really love her!

Thank you!!

Sunshine was 'just another unwanted kitten' out of the many we get every spring. His family dumped him and his Momma to die.  Luckily, a kind soul found them before it was too late.

Hi Lisa and Roy,
I wanted to send you guys an update about Sunshine (who we now call  Jack...full name "Giacomo")!  He is doing great and is as cute is  ever.  He is starting to let us sleep a little more at night, although  he still spends time trying to get under the covers to bite our legs
and toes!  He seems to be a pretty happy kitty who is always purring and excited to relax and play at home with us.  He has lots of toys  (like a little boxing ring) that he LOVES to play with!  His favorite  are the little mice that that they sell at petfood warehouse (he likes  to play fetch with them!)!  We have a little harness for him and have taken him to the park (which he loved).  He is so funny when we take  him outside because he goes straight into hunting mode, ready to  attack!  We love him so much that I am considering getting him a playmate (I have been looking at your petfinder website and your latest kitty, "Inca" was soo adorable!).  Anyways, here are some  pictures for you both to enjoy!  Thanks for giving us such a loving  little friend!  Sincerely, Kathryn

Pace (pronounce Pah-chay) came to us along with her Mom.  Momma had an "unwanted litter" so the folks that had her threw her out on to the streets.  She ended up homeless, forging for food for her self and her pups.  We rescued this family and folks like Pace's Mom and Dad saved them from a life of worry.

Hi,
This is Josh and Tatiana.  We adopted Pace (pronounced Pah-chay) from you last March. I'm sure you'll recognize her from the pictures. She's doing great and has been having a blast in the snow. Hope all is well with Save Our Strays.
Enjoy the pictures.pace 1pace3pace4pace 5

Roswell was a 'family guy' until his family decided they could no longer keep him because he 'need more time than they could give him.'  The family was about to have their third child, so  eight year old Roswel found he wore out his welcome!  Here is an update from his new forever home:

Hello,
Everything is going perfectly!!  I couldn't’t be happier.  Roswell is doing very well, the kids are keeping him quite active and Roswell is keeping all of us quite active!!  He does very well letting us know when he needs to go out, we move his bed around the house for him, so at night he’s in our room, during the day either in the dinning room ( he likes laying in the sun) or in the living room.  As soon as he see’s his leash he knows what it means.  He does really well w/ eating.  He is like having a vacuum 24/7.  Anything the kids drop no worry he’s got it!!  LOL!!  We went for a little ride over the weekend and he did great!!  I took some pics over the weekend and I’ll download them and send them along.  Thanks again for giving me first chance w/ him.  I think he is very happy and I know my family and I are.
 Well keep you posted!!  Robin

Bernie was a young adult when he was rescued from a city animal control facility.  These 'facilities' do the best they can to 'control' dogs and protect the public from them.  Unfortunately, animal control facilities are most likely to kill happy, healthy adoptable pets throughout the many cities across the United States.  Bernie was one of the lucky ones...he escaped with his life!
I THOUGHT YOU MIGHT LIKE TO SEE BERNIE AND HIS BIG SISTER AND LITTLE BROTHER ALL RESCUE DOGS.

Wolfie was a pup when rescued.  He came from an out-of-state shelter where he would have been killed due to overcrowding.  He's one lucky dog at his new home!s

 Hi There!
This is Steve, owner of shep/lab mix Wolfie!  We renamed him Günther (pronounced Goon-ter) and he's been GREAT.  I know all dogs  are special, but he is truly amazing.  He was housebroken after just  a few days and has learned many commands and tricks.  We have been crate training him which has been great because we have overlapping  schedules and he's never alone for more than 2 to 3 hours at the  most.  As you'll see in the photos, he has gone from a little puffball to a lean machine!
Okay, so without further adieu, some photos!

Coolidge was rescued from the state of Virginia.  The rescuer who brought him to Vermont had originally planned for him to go to one of the larger Humane organization.   His story takes a twist here.  When he arrived at that shelter, the shelter refused him as he was "bigger than a puppy" and they claimed they were "full."   It seems that although they had specifically asked the rescuer to bring him to them, they changed their mind when he arrived at their door as a slightly larger sized and older pup that they wanted - he did not fit the 'in-take adoption criteria.'  So now, after being rescued from a kill-shelter and then riding in a vehicle for over 11 hours this poor guy had no where to go.  Save Our Strays stepped up and took him in- no questions asked.  A note from his new Momma follows:

Hi Lisa and Roy,
I am the one who adopted the Virginia rescue.  He is an absolute joy and so far doing well... loving romping in the snow. I just wanted to be in touch.  The pup is named Coolidge- cools for short and he has 2 friends Abbott a Pyr and Juno a black lab. He is sweet with the cats, goats and horses.  Here some photos of the pup with his new buddy.              Thanks - Lindsay

Zoey  was just another puppy from an unwanted litter that wound up in a high kill shelter.  Zoey (now re-named Heidi) would have died from in that shelter if she did not get rescue through Save Our Strays.  Look at this beautiful dog!  It would have been such a waste of life for that to happen.  Unfortunately, that is just what happens for hundreds of thousands of others that were not as lucky.  We post this message in their memory...save a Life, Spay your pet.

Lisa,
Just wanted to give you the most recent picture of Heidi. She is an amazing , very smart little girl .Well not so little anymore. We can't thank you enough for letting her come into our lives.
Thank You so much !!!!

Mark was found abandoned in the woods.  It was deer season and a hunter found him there, with him were his siblings.  Within 24 hours of his arrival it became obvious that Mark was not feeling well.  A trip to the emergency vet revealed the reason why. Little Mark had Parvo - a serious and often times fatal puppy virus.  Mark underwent treatment for the condition and 5 days later he was "out-of-the-woods".  This was quite an expense for a rescue like ours that operates on public donations and limited funds.  As you can see, the decision to treat Mark has its rewards.  He is a happy, healthy, very loved boy!

 Hello,
I wanted to send you some pictures of Mark.  He has been renamed to Hunter because his grandfather's name is Marc also.  He is doing good and loving the space he has.  On New Years he met his dog cousins and got very tired out running around with them all night.  Thank you he is a joy to have around the house.

Spencer was a "Georgia Death Row Dog."  We say that because it is well known that the so called shelters/animal control facilities in the state of Georgia kill more than 80% of all dogs that comes into them - and the number for cats is even higher!!  Spencer is a Blue Tick Hound - and because he is a Blue Tick Hound his chance of getting out of that shelter alive was slim to none! A kind rescuer, with who we partner, recognized the potential and loving nature of Spencer and assisted us in getting him to Vermont where he would be safe to live out the remainder of his years in a loving forever home.

Hi Roy and Lisa,

Thank you so much for bringing soft and sweet little Stanley by to see me.  What a lover!  It is a joy to see this kind of success story.  I thought I would attach a few pictures of my dreamboat, Spencer.  You can see that he loves to watch over Winston, the little snoozing red dachshund.  However, when he nuzzled Sasha one time, I caught Sasha looking NOT TOO PLEASED!  Actually, he and Sasha get along fine.
Take care,

Bobbie

Lacey was rescued from a High-Kill shelter where she was left by her elderly owner when he went in to a nursing home.  Unfortunately for Lacey, she was an "owner surrender" and was an "older" dog...that combination was a sure death sentence!  Lucky for Lacey - the dogs at that shelter had an 'advocate' and Save Our Strays was notified of Lacey's fate.  We rescued her and had her transported to Vermont where she could have a 'second leash on life.'  Here is a note from her new family;

  Hi!
Just wanted to take a second to let you know that Lacey is doing great- she has really come out of her shell!  She has checked out every corner of our house, seems happiest wherever we are and is great with the kids.  She doesn't seem to know any commands but is figuring things out quickly.  We introduced her to our neighbors dog this morning and they had a great time playing. She did bark at our neighbor's husband, who has grey hair, but after she sniffed his hand she was fine. We just got back from a nice walk in the woods, and she is a great walking companion.  I've  never had a dog who uses their nose so much- she must have a really good sniffer!  The only problem we've had is with our cat- she growls and hisses and that provokes Lacey, who wants to play, and then the chase is on.  St Bernards can move fast when they want to!  I am sure that it will take a couple of weeks for her to get used the idea of a new dog.

Anyway, thanks very much for bringing her to VT and letting us adopt her!  She's a great girl!

Bella was found wandering the streets of Pennsylvania, skinny, starving and with bloody foot pads!  We asked that she be transported to us from the state of Pennsylvania.  This girl would have been immediately killed had she been taken to a local PA shelter!  They do not place Pit Bulls or Pit mixes due to the dog fighting in the area - all Pits are immediately euthanized there - no matter how good their temperament. From the story & picture below, you can see Bella is quite the girl.  Save Our Strays believes that good dogs should find good homes, even if that means helping a Pit.  In our opinion, when it comes to the Pit Bull or Pit Bull mixes:  It's not the Breed - it's the Deed that should be condemned!
Hi Lisa,
Just wanted to let you know the dogs are doing great.  Jessie who is now Bella (I was
out voted!) is adjusting well.  She checked every space possible out in the house and took
a look around out back too.  She had a couple accidents last night but we expected that
while she gets used to her new home.  She didn't get into anything and spent some time
hanging out with Buster in the living room chewing on their bones.
This morning she came in my room and cuddled with me before I had to get ready to
leave, she got her face right in my neck, it was so cute!!!
I've called home several times and everything has been fine.  They had one scuffle but
other than that they've been getting along fine.  My daughter is taking lots of pictures so we'll send
you some soon.
Thank you so much for helping to bring us together!!     -D. B. & Family

OTIS
came to Save Our Strays after his Mom gave birth to an unwanted litter.  There was no wish for puppies so the folks dumped Otis, his sibling and his Mother at a kill-shelter - we rescued and transported them to Vermont so they could find a loving home.  Because Otis is considered a common "Big Black Dog" at the kill-shelter, he and his family would have been the first to die when the weekly "euthanasia time" came around!  Otis is a poster boy for the reason to spay your pets!

Hello Lisa--

We adopted a Black Lab/Golden Retriever mix puppy from you in May 06
and we couldn't be happier with him.  In fact, we love him so much,
we want another.  I know the Lab mixes go so fast, so I was wondering
if you currently have any Lab mix puppies?  We have 3 kids and a cat,
so we're pretty particular about the mix.  Here is a picture of Otis, who just turned 2 1/2.
Thank you! - P.V.

KNUT was brought to our rescue.  This kitty is from Vermont where there is an ever increasing problem of homeless kittens and cats.  Please spay and neuter your pet to prevent unwanted litters - soon there will be no homes for them! - "Prevent a Litter - Save a Critter!"  Here is an update from Knut's family:

Hi guys!

Finally, here are some pictures of Knut...better late than never.

He loves his new home, and we love the newest addition to our family. He follows us everywhere and comes running to the door when we come home from work, just like our other cat Linus does. There's a window bed in the office where he spends a lot of nap time in (and that's what he and Linus are sharing in one of the pictures). We have a bar in our basement with a big dance floor; Knut loves sliding on the floor. He runs across the whole floor to chase a toy and then just before he reaches it he slides into it and grabs it with his paws. It's absolutely adorable. We've learned he's fascinated by toilets, has no fear of the vacuum, purrs as loud as his little body can, and loves greeting visitors. We're teaching him that a belly rub is relaxing, not a chance to attack the humans, and that getting brushed is a good thing. He and Linus are getting along well, Linus just doesn't want us to know that. When he doesn't think we're watching, we catch the two of them sleeping together or looking out the window next to each other. Linus follows Knut everywhere, albeit at a slower pace! My favorite times are the evenings when Knut is all worn out from a tough day of being a kitty; he'll fall asleep in my arms for hours and is totally relaxed. We love our new little Knut and wouldn't change a thing about him.

I saw last week on your website that Snowdrift was no longer listed; I assume he was adopted which is wonderful news! If he's anything like his brother, someone else got a terrific cat too.

Thanks again for helping Knut find us.  - E. and R.

MARCUS came to SOS, Save Our Strays in 1997.  We brought him to our rescue from an out-of-state  shelter.  He was less than 24 hours away from being killed.  The shelter he came from, like many across the United States, kills healthy, happy adoptable animals every day due to over crowding.  Please do your part to prevent the killing and Spay or Neuter your pets!  Here is an update from Marcus' Forever Home Family:

We have been blessed with Marcus for 1 year now so we decided to make it his Birthday!!!  We just wanted to share the pic with you!  Marcus is one of the BEST things that has EVER happened to us!!   - H.&D         p.s. We chipped in a little to help with those poor cats :(
